My Shop (detached garage) is 34'Wide X 28'Deep. I have recessed into the ceiling 20 fluorescent fixtures that carry 2, 4' fluorescent bulbs per fixture. Recessed and spaced into the walls (at work height) I have 3, 4' fluorescent 2 bulbs fixtures. Every ten foot and centered across the shop is a drop light suspended from the ceiling. I also use in dark areas a stand mounted pair of portable halogen lights. I have the ceiling lights switched between three switch's so not all have to be on at the same time. As you can see I like a lot of light. My wife and son like to say when I go to the shop, "someone needs to call Clinton (nuke power plant) and put them on alert that dad's heading to the shop".

The 24X24 attached garage is not near as bad as the above, it only has 7 fluorescent fixtures. But it is just used to park every day cars.
