If that would work, Sony and Microsoft would be all over it. They pay a lot of people a lot of money to find the sweet spot.
Honestly, at $800, I'm building something myself for a whole range of reasons, particularly because I'm interested in customization when you are talking about that level of $$.
There's also some interesting dynamics that come into play at various points. A $400-500 console sees a lot of mass-production effect, and probably compares more directly to a $600 computer. An $800 console might look like an $850 computer, which doesn't exactly make a compelling case.
