Replacing the rod bearings and mains...yes you should be able to. I have before atleast on the older VG30DE motors. PITA, but do able. You have to release some pressure from the main caps.

If the crank has to be removed, timing components have to be taken off. If pistons/rods have to be pulled, then the heads have to come off. Might as well just pull it to make life simple and easy.
