hot spots are literally spots on the flywheel or center plate that have been heated up from use (in metal forming terms its called "work hardening"). Every flywheel will have these spots due to use (its unavoidable), and old and/or abused clutches will typically have a lot of spots or even giant spots. Really bad/deep hot spots cannot be resurfaced since the metal is too tough, and can cause clutch discs to slip.
BTW: do not confuse the spots on the clutch disk, those are my fingerprints...
