in the top and out the bottom(cooler things are heavier), and that's only if you can prime the engine. mounting horizontally with the fittings on top is preferred for a street car because you don't have to fill the cooler before start-up so it gets oil faster, it also won't affect the dipstick reading as much for the same reason.
