Go take a test drive in a Focus ST (just ignore the toque steer).
The torque come in so low, you are hard pressed to tell, just gobs of torque right off the bat (max torque at around 2500 RPM). You get that by using a smaller turbo but it pays for it by running out of air over 6K RPM. With the newer setups, especially twin scroll setups, you can almost eliminate the old legacy problems of earlier setups.
