Actually 35k is about when something like that would go out. Most likely it was a machining or defect in the metal that led to the early failure. This is a good thing and why cars come with warranties. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start breaking syncros every 35k, then it might be your driving style.
Also I went from a 4 banger '98 S-10 to the Z, I enjoy spirited shifting as well
