Anyone who lies about that should be punished. There are some cool judges that could come up with creative punishments (like holding a sign in front of you to be blasted into cyberspace for all to see). But I do not think lying about being a vet is not a crime, only if you acquire federal/state benefits by telling that lie. However, I think I did hear of an individual who received preferrential treatment for hiring because they were a combat vet. When it was discovered, they immediately lost their job and were arrested. Don't remember hearing the result of the trial.
