i have to say i disagree with this as a blanket statement.
Front engine/RWD cars coming stagger from the factory is usually a case of making the car safer at the limit by making them understeer biased.
as long as the suspension is setup to run a square tire setup, the car can not only be progressive in break away characteristics, but also faster then the understeer bias stagger setup. NA 370s are not big in torque, so anything larger then a 285 in the rear is over kill in my opinion, and has trouble getting up to proper operating temp. I run 285/35/18 square, and the thermal tire behavior is much better then with the stagger setups ive run in the past.
Of course, big power additions from F/I justify a large rear tire stagger, but in NA trim, the 370 i feel does very well sqaure (275-285 all around)
