First upgrade should be the head unit! Should greatly improve sound quality. It can be thought of as an amp as it'll be putting out a lot more power than the stock unit.

With a stock head unit you'd have to splice into the speaker wires to run amps. When you're ready to run a sub and amp the (new) front speakers, it's far better and easier with an aftermarket head unit.
