It's there to put devices like your media player in. There's the A/V connections and iPod interface down there. You can plug all that stuff in and have it run off the car power instead it's own battery. Then you can close the center console without a problem. It's not meant to be used for devices to charge outside the center console. That's what the second 12V socket is for.

It's there for a good reason. I use it in the M35 all the time.
