I am a firm believer that the stock air boxes are decently built and with the addition of K&N Drop ins + tubes you will have better breathing and a few extra hp's. I think the "throttle response" that I felt was in my head. But I did reset the ECU recently and the car seemed a HECK of a lot faster.
I have heard the short rams and they do make significantly more noise then the drop ins, but I can't hear my intakes anyways since my short tails drown out the noise. So if you are just looking for an easy weekend, bang for your buck, fun project = drop ins.
If you want to show off the car at meets, and pop the hood, and tell everyone your name brand...then spend the $500 and get a CAI. But the gains are within 5whp between most of the aftermarket intakes. So really its about the brand + look IMO
