FYI: you can visually check the condition of the filter by looking behind and below the battery. The air inlet is in the firewall and provides a view of the filter.

I have to remove the piece that holds the battery cover to get a good view. Easy job - just a few "pop rivets" and a little twisting and it comes right off. Replacing the piece is only very slightly more difficult. It's a snap after you do it once.
