Depending on the cutting pad and compound with a DA buffer it can mar up the finish on your window trim, plastics, etc. It's more of a safety precaution than anything just in case the buffing pad hits those areas on the car.
Plus it also prevents the compound from getting lodged in all the cracks and crevices (which is a PITA to remove)  |
