I gotta admit, when I first heard about this mod I thought it was possibly the finest example of Redneck Engineering ever. But I've been wanting a little bit more sound so I called my favorite muffler shop to see how much it would cost for him to do it (I don't have ramps, yet, and didn't want to crawl under the car to DIY). After much laughing and asking several times if I was sure I wanted to do it, he said "Twenty bucks and that includes the washers." I thought "What the heck. We'll crank it up while it's still on the rack and put it back to normal if I don't like it."
I only had one washer put in but it sounds MUCH better. Very little difference at idle; just enough sound when the RPMs come up. Plus it's a little "throatier." Sounds very nice when downshifting.
The only concern I have is that there are some soft suspension parts nearby. If I decide to leave the washers in, I think some sort of shield/deflector will be in order.
