That's the one issue we have to deal with. Last bad one was 1989 Hugo. If you look at a map of the coastline, one good thing is that upper Florida through Georgia and into South Carolina curves in, then back out again at North Carolina around Wilmington and the outer banks. Storms tend to head up the coast and shift out skirting past this area, but the outer banks area into Virginia end up getting hit. Not a guarantee, but this seems to happen more often than not.
