The volume on the tablet should, as Drex mentioned, be very high, if not topped out. Some units will overdrive depending on the volume (not sure about the Nexus 7 in this regard), so if the sound quality gets bad (static, like a radio turned up too high), pull the volume back down on the Nexus a bit.

Def try an EQ program. Poweramp is a great program for mp3's, but the built-in EQ does not extend to other apps, hence my suggestion of a standalone eq program.
