Don't let it bother you. Either way you'll be fine later. Worrying about "what you should have done" is not going to change anything and you'll just add stress.
Think of as this way. By renting your are leaving yourself flexible, where with owning you are stuck with it until you sell it or rent it out. Both have their + / -
