However, I can't really comment on the whine that you're hearing, as I've never heard it (I don't downshift to 1st, and very rarely does SRM occur if I'm rolling and need 1st gear - happens at on ramp lights when I try to time them w/o using the brakes.
).
I would assume it's the synchro's playing catch-up though.
