Most likely the window regulator based on your description.

If it's common, I would suggest taking the door panel off and pinpointing the culprit. A dead window in the down position is not worth the risk of interior damage from the elements.

However, the part is like $250 bucks, so it might be worth it to just put up with it as long as you can.
