I had to use a strap wrench, and it crushed the stock knob. I didn't even want to replace it. I was just trying to replace the stock black leather with my own wine leather. But when that happened, I decided to go aftermarket.

I tore both of mine in half (like through the aluminum thread). Used a pipe wrench to grib the knob. Wrapped the shifter in a towel and had a buddy hold it steady with another pipe wrench to keep from torquing the gearbox.
Edit: Actually come to think of it, we managed to get it off the 2nd Z without tearing it in half but we still ripped the leather up pretty badly.
