Went to the shop today to do some more diagnostics with almost 3 mechanics, every one of them had a shot at it (one at a time). Started the car waited till the Rev went down, i had One guy in the car with me (doors, windows closed) and the other mechanic was in front of the car (hood open). Started revving the car (Just gently plipping the throttle), and they heard the whining sound. I also noticed that the higher the oil temp gets the sound is more noticeable even when its idling. The mechanic started moving the oil lines and suddenly the was a different pitch in the sound. So he said probably the oil line is rubbing against some body parts. I was little re leaf to what he said. He took the front bumper off started to move the lines and see were it was touching or rubbing against body parts and covering it with rubber hoses. Started the car and the whining sound is still there! This time the car is on a lift no front bumper hood open and inside the garage. kept revving the car for the mechanic to find where the sound is coming from. I've been revving the car all morning so i tried a different method. By trying to hold the engine in a sirtin RPM to find if there is a sweet spot for this sound. It appears that the sweet spot for this sound is just slightly over 1000 RPM (somewhere between 1000-1250). And this time a clicking sound appears (i think the clicking sound was there all the time but i was passing it by revving). This time it was confirmed that it was the sandwich plate that's causing this clicking and whining sound.
Now, The only mechanical thing in the sandwich plat is a small ball and the spring under it. The only explanation for it to be there is to re leaf any sudden high oil purser in the oil lines. to prevent it from leaking at the joints.
So I was told that i have to contact Stillen to sort out this issue with them, coz Stillen mite not talk to us since you ordered the Oil cooler. I told the sales person to give it a try, Coz your shop installed their product and if they didn't want to cooperate I'll call them. So he agreed coz he had to talk to them about the same oil cooler that they ordered and installed for a customer. His issue was the cooler stop cooling!
While i was waiting for a respond. I called John at Z1 Motorsport to see if he had a chance to look at there car. He told me that they just got the car in, and will have an answer tomorrow.
Got a respond from the shop that Stillen says that the car shouldn't make any kind of sound with there cooler kit, and they will replace the sandwich plat. So i asked will they overnight the part they said no we have to send them the part first and when they get the part they will send us a new one. I called Stillen tech the same person who the shop talked to and i asked him if he can send the part overnight because i was spouse get my car last week and now its been delayed, and i have to get my car done this week. he said no they have to receive my part first and send it to there development department to investigate the cause. If it was a manufacturing defect, or an installation issue. and the ball is in the shops court. The sooner they send the part the sooner we can take care of this. I was like
If this is a "Ball Game" for you Stillen. You won. Why , Because you made money from me buying ur "Racing oil cooler". You saved money from not paying for parts being overnight back and forth. You saved money for not paying for the re installation that was caused by a defect of your product. Plus the cost of new oil and filter. Not to mention my wasted time.
Knowing that you had issues with your Oil sandwich plat (
oil cooler sanwich plate noise), and other two on this thread have the same problem. Not to mention all the drama on other parts you make for this car. I don't think i will put any product from your company on my car.
To make the story short. I called the shop and asked them to order the Nissan Motorsport sandwich plat with there oil lines. Hope I get my car done this week.
If you want to look at the bright side of my situation. I'll be holding the record of the most expansive Oil cooler on a 370z.
Thank you Stillen.
