I believe the VQ37HR is basically a VQ35HR with a longer stroke. I don't believe they are significantly different designs so I don't think you can assume that they need to get the same life out of the R&D for the two models. Having said that, I don't think Nissan has a need to upgrade the engine for several years to come anyway. The power-weight ration on the 370z is pretty awesome right now. Adding another 20-30HP isn't going to make the car significantly better or faster.
I would love to see them work out a DI version of it, but I think fuel economy would be a bigger selling point on that upgrade than the power boost. The VQ35XX/VQ37XX goes into a lot of vehicles besides the 370z and Nissan is going to get a much more value out of +3MPG than they are with +30HP. The bonus with DI is that you can get both.
