The audio is streaming from the phone through the selected bluetooth sources (which Pandora uses).

You're hearing it because its overlapping on that same generic bluetooth audio streaming channel which basically sends all audio coming out of your device (with a few exceptions).

It's normal for you not to be able to hear it through the car speakers when the head unit is set to another source. You can, however, make both your phone speakers and bluetooth speakers output the sound if you want. The way to do that differs based on your phone's build of Android, but usually there will be a little settings icon next to the popup window that comes on your phone as you turn the volume up/down.
