You need a way to retain the spring. The auto works by a button release, so you need to be able to have veticle motion to enguage the button. In stock form, the horizontal or diagonal motion is converted to verticle motion relaseing the shifting lock. The stock AT knob has a retetion clip, you don't want to just set the know on there with a spring under as the knob could plop off & there is no backing pressure for the spring. There are no retention threads like most manuals, so you need to ask the guy how the knob is retained & work a solution around that.
