The part of the SLU that talks to the BCM needs to be in working order. It will fail eventually, but I haven't seen any reports of it happening yet.

As far as I can tell, the only way to get rid of the SLU completely requires that the BCM be re-programmed to ignore it.

If you run down the list, a lot of people answered "yes" on "did you disable SLU". That gets me wonder...
