The 2008+ EJ257 will blow the cylinder 4 ringland if you touch pretty much anything other than the catback without a tune. Most of the failures are from guys slapping an intake and exhaust on the car and running it untuned. 2004-2007 WRXs and 2005-2007 STIs blew the cylinder 4 ringland due to the fact that there's a nasty lean spot in the factory tune where the ECU switches from closed to open loop fueling. The EJ205 in the 2002-2003 WRX had no problems running untuned with an exhaust. Those motors blew up because the owners put a manual boost controller on it. The MBC would allow full boost at part throttle, with the expected results. If you get a good tune on a Subaru it will be fine. The problem are the owners not realizing how bad the OEM tune is, and changing parts without getting a good tune.
