If it's out of warranty, absolutely: test drive it first. If it's in warranty, call your local dealership and tell them about the car you want to buy, and that you want their 28-point inspection they use to sell used cars as "certified" and retain the warranty. Mentioning that you'd use them as your regular service center also helps with the discussion. ($$ for them)
Anywho, that's what I did with mine when I bought it 500+ miles away from an individual and not a dealership. $90 to certify and if there was something wrong during the check or before, they would warranty it. And I have the peace of mind that the checks are done and she's in her service schedule again.
