Allow me to be clear.
"apps" are applications. These are user programs. These are all software.
"programs" are all software, they include apps as a subset. Other programs include drivers and scripts that your average joe doesn't ever interact with, as well as Operating Systems.
"software" refers to non-hardware. Hardware being the physical device, software is anything that tells hardware what to do.
"software" roughly equates to "programs". "apps" are a subset of "software" and "programs" All apps are by definition software. App stores sell software. Off-the-shelf software are also usually apps, because they are user-facing programs.
In other words, you guys remind me of the old lady from the Android commercials. "Is this the line for the apps?" Yes, mom.
