Resting your hand on the shifter shouldn't be bad for the car. However, it takes 1 hand off the steering wheel - which is how you control the car, and how the car gives feedback to you. I always keep two hands on the wheel for safety reasons. Not to mention, I'm not sure what would happen if you had one hand at 12:00 and the airbag deployed. Arm to the face.
