I quit for several years by tapering off. Started at 1 cigarette every 30 minutes. If I missed by more than 10-15 minutes, I made myself wait until the next period was up. After a few days I went to 45 minutes. By the time I got to six hours (changing every 3-4 weeks by then), withdrawal was much easier. Once I quit, if the craving got particularly bad, I would chew a piece of gum until it cried for mercy. YMMV

If the e-cigs don't work out for you, try reading up on the various 12-step programs (AA, NarcAnon, &c). You might find something that helps. I can see where having a "sponsor" (someone to call when cravings are real bad) might help.

Good luck, again.
