I have seen a few documentaries about police cars and what the various law enforcement agencies look for in a car. From what I can remember, their main concerns are that they can carry around all of their gear while managing to keep sight of the offender and their cars do not fail. Most passenger vehicles will quickly fail if driven to the limit on public roads due to pot holes, speed bumps, debris, curbs etc. So as long as the cops have radios and slightly more rugged vehicles then they have a better chance of outlasting the offenders during high speed chases. Some of those cars that were tested are very respectable given the extra weight of the cars.
