It really depends on your budget, but the basics should be a medium pad to remove the swirls and a fine pad to finish. You're really only choosing the compound you want to go with. I use Adam's Polishes is great and more recently Meguire's M105 & M205 which is also great.

Here's a list of the basics:
-Polisher, obviously
-Pads
-clay bar
-detail spray
-microfiber towels (quality ones, not the cheap stuff at autozone and walmart)
-Polish of your choice
-Wax of your choice

Or this kit with the Groits 6" and Megs M105/M205 combo.

Use the discount codes to save yourself a few bucks.
Go with a Dual-Action Polisher..which is the 7424XP. This is really all you need. I have both the Porter Cable 7424XP dual action polisher and a High Speed Vector Polisher. 90% of the time I use the PC.
