If it's like anything we have around here whether it be the automated car washes at a gas station or going to a place dedicated to just car washes but still use automated machines...they just attempt to detail the car afterwards. Then my answer would be yes it is scratching your car. If it is automated those shammies are scratching your car each time they slap it to knock the dirt off as its sprayed with soap/wax/etc. Something to think about is if a guy with a 4x4 went through it before you that had just went mudding. Well guess what is all over those shammies that are slapping your car? Tiny rocks and other debris he collected in the mud from the trails. I would stay far away from any of those places like the plague and only hand wash my car at my house. If you have the time and resources its the best way to go. No one is going to care more for your car than you are.
