I just got my first speeding ticket in 20yrs. here in vegas in a work zone by a state cop that paced or guessed the speed. Back on the east coast most courts won't accept a paced speed reading.
End result 5mph over plead down to a non moving violation $250 fine, so it just goes to show you that even if the cop doesn't clock you with any radar or laser, they can always fall back on the old guestimate and nail you any way, if the state court allows a pace reading.

My seven year old Passport 8500 let's me know two to three miles ahead of time (Ka band). They definitely give enough warning.
And obviously there's no warning if they're sitting up there doing the math when you pass between two points, other than you seeing them from a distance (they have to be visible, otherwise it's entrapment). I use traffic for this too, people ahead hit their brakes every time they get a whiff of the 5-0, and no matter the time of night there's always traffic on our freeways and surface streets.
