I know all about the sound... the Canon HF/HG series actually sound very good and are even better with external mics.

I want something quality that I can use for a long while... not some cheap-o crap.

And Sony vs. Canon -- seems to me like the Canons are a little better? I lean towards them because that's a brand that I use very often... printers... DSLR... etc.
