Like others have said, the currency movements of the last 3 years have made producing vehicles in Japan very expensive. Nissan could not pass these costs on immediately because it would kill sales to have a $3-4k 1 year jump. That might be ok for the low volume GT-R's, but not for Z purchasers. So they have phased it in over the years.
I would say this is the exact same reason the BRZ came in thousands over original estimates also.
