Never seen anything like you described.
2 ways not to drive altimas...

Base model or wheels less than 17". The suspension isn't too soft, the tires are way too mushy. My 3.5se owned a lot of cars on the road. And my 2.5 I'm about to get rid of those 16's for 18's. My only complaint on the proper altima is numb steering rivaling 08 G37's. But overall, the altima rides better than all the other supposed performance family sedans.
