Not really, a set of hertz or focal polyglass will really hit hard without a sub. However I recommend running something like that off an amp. So you are looking at paying more money. However I love the polyglass.

For a 500 or 1k bill your not going to be able to get solid bass from lower end speakers like the db's. I would recommend upgrading the head unit first than later upgrade the speakers.
