I had a drunk driver hit me from behind and take off... I called the police while following and once i got the plate they told me to stop following... if he runs and causes an accident that hurts someone you can be held partially at fault for pursuing.

I question your local PD if they don't recommend the same and in addition they suggest you might want to carry a weapon in the future. I get that you have a right to defend yourself but an iced tea can doesn't require lethal force.
