Went to a Little League game yesterday, with my Z and my wife, to watch our grandson play in the finals of the local Little league championship. He is ten, pitches and plays shortstop and is one of the smallest players on the team.
The lead off pitcher for his team, Thunder, allowed three runs and was taken out with no outs and the bases loaded in the very first inning.
Poor kid suffered the greatest embarrassment a young man can suffer. His very loud mother kept yelling his name and shouting advice from the sidelines! There is no single humiliation greater than being a young boy and having your mother making her presence known, especially by loudly calling your name! (Mothers take a hint!) Probably destroyed his concentration...and emotionally scarred him for life as well!
My grandson came in to pitch. He threw nine pitches and got three outs to retire the side!( That's "Old Hoss" pitching..to those of you that know what I mean!)
He pitched a few more innings and held the Rattlers scoreless but there are rules governing how many pitches these youngsters can throw so in the fourth inning he was taken out.
Thunder, his team was ahead but the Rattlers fought back. In the bottom of the ninth it was 7-5, Thunder, but the Rattlers scored one and got the bases loaded with no outs threatening a tie then a win. Then one Rattler stuck out and another hit a pop fly to center that was easily caught.
Next batter got a full count of three balls and two strikes. Then he hit fast ball in the vicinity of the shortstop. My grandson made a fast diving move and caught the ball inches from the ground getting the final out and securing the championship!!
What a night! Doesn't get much better than this!
