I've been doing that for the past 9 years (~100,000 miles) on my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. It has a stick shift mode and sometimes I think it is there, but is not
. I go from drive (thinking that I am upshifting) to neutral and then back again without any incidents.
If a POS Hyindai can handle it, I'm sure the Z can as well. Just don't do a 7,500 RPM neutral slam and all will be right with the world.
