In terms of performance, I can't imagine them being too much different. I'm sure the LTH will be better as they converge later causing better airflow, but I'd be willing to bet it's not a huge impact (single digit WHP). In which case I'll just take the hit and put test pipes on.

You should check out the ART pipes, they keep the rasp out of it and do give proven gains over standard test pipes, almost eliminating the low end loss from normal test pipes.
Usually, headers just give some high end, otherwise there's not much in them for a road car, and as you say, no good for inspection time. Not to mention the pain accessing the header area.
