Question: Does your DSLR have a grid overlay option in the viewfinder to help you adhere to the "rule of thirds" if you so choose?
Thanks for noticing my avatar. I try to mix it up.

I use a Canon 7D and it has an option to display a grid pattern in the viewfinder. I sometimes use it if I am unsure about how level I am. The 1/3 thing comes naturally though. When I first learned to shoot seriously, it was drilled into me. I learned the fundamentals from a guy who worked for the Associated Press and sometimes the National Geographic. He was a great teacher but harsh if you did not follow the rules, at least in the beginning. We shot everything on Kodachrome for color and Tri-X for B&W.

When I shot color slide stuff, our critiques were on the screen, exactly as captured -- no cropping, exposure adjustment -- nothing. Over time, you tend to learn to do everything you can through the lens and get it right the first time.
