The popping from the metal would be much more subtle than a backfire. It would almost sound like a ticking sound coming from the exhaust itself. It is the sudden change in temperature inside of the exhaust tubing right as the car shuts off. If what I wrote makes no sense to you or sounds confusing, please do not hesitate to call e directly. As for a backfire, we all know what that sounds like.
