The "push and hold required" cars do so out of a safety concern. (You don't want the computer cranking the car through the garage if something wrong and it managed to get in gear when you can't just let go to stop it). It's the same reason we have to hold down the brake. Holding down the brake was never required until these auto-cranking cars came around. I would be curious to know whether the "push and hold" cars like the Range Rover require the brake to be depressed.
