Keeping the fields small isn't particularly healthy for the series, though.. Fans, sponsors, teams, etc. want their cars out on track. I don't think there's enough money on the line to make it worth it to haul all of your team and equipment to the track when there is a risk you might not even race. It's not like NASCAR Sprint Cup where you can spend as little as possible to attempt to qualify for the race, then if you do qualify you park your car on lap 1 of the race and collect $100k for last place. There are only so many teams that can afford to compete for the championship at that level so you get some bottom feeder guys trying to make a buck.
