It is a safety issue. Belts keep you relatively stable and stationary during the crash. Your chest doesn't hit the steering column as often, you are less likely to be ejected from the vehicle, less likely to bang around inside the cabin of the car in the case of hard contact.
I don't know how much of this can be mitigated with modern airbag systems, but I do know that you are safer with a belt on than not.
