Wrap the shift
lever in a few layers of shop towel and then grap it with vise grips. Wrap the
knob with a towel and grab it with a strap wrench (available at any hardware place).
Hold the vise grips and twist the knob free with the strap wrench.
On a side note: I got mine off without tools -- just lucky I guess.
