I'm going to give the FR-S a shot but I have a feeling I'm probably not going to prefer it over the Mazda MX-5.
Performance numbers wise the BRZ and FR-S will be roughly equal to the MX-5's considering the power to weight ratios. (2500/170 : 2800/200)
I'm going to predict that the BRZ and FR-S will be slightly quicker beyond say 95-100 mph or ~ 1/4mile due to the 30 HP advantage though.
They'll likely be a bit quicker around the track as well due to less roll vs. the MX-5. After all coupe vs. convertible has some advantages.
However, with that said I still think the MX-5 will remain the more enjoyable car to drive for most. Also things like build quality and the fact that the MX-5 is a proven platform doesn't hurt either.
The 09' and up MX-5's have some really nice engine tweaks which improve durability (it's a very stout little 2.0l), and pulls strong all the way to it's 7400 cut-off and sounds great as well. The car feels much stronger than you'd think and feels plenty quick from behind the wheel.
Of course you don't buy a MX-5 for drag racing but the point is it's quick enough and is a blast to drive. But yeah the FR-S and BRZ appear to be promising so we'll see.
